China's coal shortage easing

Chinanews, Beijing, July 21 (By Yu Jingbo) - It is revealed at today's
national coal work conference that as the economy cools down, China's
coal demand has dropped and the tension between coal supply and demand
has been alleviated to some extent. By the end of June, China's coal
reserve has reached 115 million tons, remaining at a normal level.
Chinese authorities also remarked today that although the situation has
become stable, the hidden risks should not be overlooked. Owing to lag
phase of coal investment and other factors, in the next few years,
China's coal, power, oil and transportation will remain quite tight.
It is learned that in the first half, China's coal market has witnessed
growing supply, slighter growth of demand, increased import volume and
reduced export volume. China's raw coal output reached 940 million tons,
up nearly 10% year on year, and the sales volume of merchantable coal hit
915 million tons, up 11.5%.According to anticipation of the National
Development and Reform Commission, China's coal output will reach 2.1
billion tons this year, while the figure was 1.956 billion tons in 2004.
