What does this phrase means?

laser2302 -
Hello Friends,

Have a look at the following paragraph:

连一次体育彩票都没有中过的陶同学日前在半个多月的时间内一口气收到了二十三条手机中奖短信,奖品种类包括汽车、电脑、冰箱、彩电、手机等物,价值金额累计高达103.6万元!接踵而至的一笔笔“飞来横财”让陶同学哭笑不得,因为这一条条极具诱惑力的手机短信只不过是些不法分子敛财的陷阱。

Can anyone tell me what does 接踵而至的一笔笔“飞来横财” means in the sentence? I'm unable to figure it out at all.

Thanks

flup13 -
there has two chinese proverbs 接踵而至 and 飞来横财
接踵而至 means things happen one after another in a very close time.
飞来横财 means you get some money or any benefits out of people's expection including your own's
florazheng -
1)

接:then, following
踵:heel
而:it is a conjunctive word only
至:arrive

接踵而至: if a thing happened, the other things followed its footsteps and arrived.

接踵而至= in the wake of, the following

2)飞来横财= pie from the sky (the unexpected money from the sky you got)

飞来:fly from the sky; get something from the sky

横:unexpected

财:fortune, money
florazheng -
Quote:
there has two chinese proverbs 接踵而至 and 飞来横财
I beg differ. They are not proverbs but idioms.
dsrguru -
Assuming they're 成語, florazheng is right. An idiom is a language-specific way of phrasing something, whereas a proverb is a saying or adage. 成語 are more like idioms, and of course they usually consist of four syllables.

I can't help with the translation, but I assume flup13 and florazheng are correct.

Typhoon made a perfect match of parrots

www.chinanews.cn 2005-08-01 16:47:55

No. 5 typhoon "Haitang" just swept across China was most impressive in
its power of destruction. To the male eclectus parrot in the Birds
Singing Grove in Fuzhou's forest park, however, "Haitang" brought him an
unexpected lover, a beautiful female eclectus parrot. Eclectus parrots
usually inhabit forests located in lowland and rain forests and have been
included into the catalog of "Convention on International Trade in
Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna." As Fujian does not have such
species of parrots in the past, this female parrot probably flew a long
way from the neighboring area of Taiwan with help of "Haitang's" wind
power. Pictured, the female eclectus parrot named "Fire Haitang" fell in
love with the male eclectus parrot in the Birds Singing Grove in Fuzhou's
forest park.

Shuttle Discovery docks at Space Station

A view from the International Space Station shows space shuttle Discovery
as it approaches the station for docking. The crew of Discovery boarded
the ISS, as NASA said it needed three more days to assess any damage to
the space shuttle.(Photo: AFP)

Destiny module of the International space station. (Photo: AP)

SPACE CENTER, Houston, July 28 - Discovery docked at the international
space station Thursday after performing an unprecedented back flip to
allow those aboard the outpost to photograph the shuttle's belly for
signs of damage.
The digital camera images will be analyzed by NASA to spot any signs of
trouble. It wasn't immediately clear how long that analysis will take.
Discovery was just 600 feet beneath the station when Commander Eileen
Collins manually steered the shuttle's nose up and slowly flipped the
spacecraft over.
Collins then repositioned the shuttle and locked onto the station just
after 7 a.m.
About two hours later, following leak and pressure checks, Discovery's
astronauts entered the orbital lab, where they were greeted with hugs and
bread and salta Russian tradition thought to bring good luck when
visiting another's home.
The station's crew then took Discovery's astronauts on a tour.

China's coal shortage easing

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-22 13:55:54

Chinanews, Beijing, July 21 (By Yu Jingbo) - It is revealed at today's
national coal work conference that as the economy cools down, China's
coal demand has dropped and the tension between coal supply and demand
has been alleviated to some extent. By the end of June, China's coal
reserve has reached 115 million tons, remaining at a normal level.
Chinese authorities also remarked today that although the situation has
become stable, the hidden risks should not be overlooked. Owing to lag
phase of coal investment and other factors, in the next few years,
China's coal, power, oil and transportation will remain quite tight.
It is learned that in the first half, China's coal market has witnessed
growing supply, slighter growth of demand, increased import volume and
reduced export volume. China's raw coal output reached 940 million tons,
up nearly 10% year on year, and the sales volume of merchantable coal hit
915 million tons, up 11.5%.According to anticipation of the National
Development and Reform Commission, China's coal output will reach 2.1
billion tons this year, while the figure was 1.956 billion tons in 2004.
