The Kashi Islamic Institute in Xinjiang is a three-year school funded by
the central government to specially nurture religious professionals for
ethnic groups in remote regions. Students in the institute are taught in
Uygur language. The institute sends out 50 graduates a year to religious
locations such as mosques in local counties and townships in order to
solve the issue of religious professional shortage. Pictured, in July at
the class, students from remote areas were studying Islamic lection. They
are expected to become imams in their hometowns.
