Sept. 14 - Chairman of Taiwan's People First Party, James Soong, has
arrived in the Eastern ciy of Shanghai as the head of a delegation to a
high level forum to be attended by people from both sides of the Taiwan
Strait.
The forum is to be held in Shanghai to fulfill the agreement reached by
the Secretary-General of the CPC Central Committee, Hu Jintao, and PFP
Chairman James Soong, during Soong's mainland tour this May.
James Soong called Shanghai the most important economic and trade center
in Asia and the world. It is also a major destination of Taiwan
businessmen. He said he hoped people across the Straits could work
together for the prosperity of the Chinese nation.
The leaders of the two parties reached agreement on six points, including
resuming negotiations across the Strait as soon as possible based on the
one-China principle embodied in the 1992 Consensus, opposing Taiwan
independence, strengthening economic and trade exchanges, pushing for
non-governmental forums and establishing service mechanisms for Taiwan
businessmen.
The mainland has made efforts to give agricultural products from Taiwan
preferential treatment, simplified the procedure for Taiwan businessmen
to enter the mainland and reduced school fees for Taiwan students who
study in the mainland.
